I'll Never Desert You: A Sweet First Look

After I was fully dressed it was time for the much-awaited first look with my handsome groom. I was a bundle of nerves and emotions at the time. I felt like I couldn't get outside to see Mr. C soon enough! My photographer was trying to take a few portraits of me beforehand but I was too anxious to stand around for long. As I came down the stairs my photographer snapped a few photos, and some more out on the beautiful Southern-style veranda at the front of the main house.

All photographs are by Christopher Helm Photography.

My bridesmaids and mom were all waiting outside and out in the distance I could see Mr. C standing with his back to us. I shooed everyone into the house, as I wanted this moment to be as private as possible for the two of us.

I remember walking out under the trees. It was very quiet and all I could hear was the swishing of my huge dress, all those ivory chiffon ruffles shifting around me. I tried my best to keep the delicate bottom up of my dress out of the grass and intentionally walked slowly so that my photographer could get some good shots. I could not stop smiling as I walked up behind my future husband and gingerly tapped him on the shoulder. I cannot describe what happiness and relief I felt as he turned to greet me, beaming with tears in his eyes. Everything suddenly felt real again, not the strange dreamlike world that had closed in around me since we first arrived at the venue. For this reason, and many more, I will always advocate that couples have a first look on their wedding day.

Our first look brought my feet back to the ground and washed away all the anxiety and nerves that had been churning inside me. I suddenly remembered that I shouldn't be nervous or worried because I was about to marry my best friend, my soul mate, my companion for this big adventure. I didn't feel alone and isolated anymore -- I knew that we were in this together, just the two of us. I felt like together we could take on the world!

And before we knew it, it was time to get ready for the ceremony! Time moves so quickly on your wedding day. People will tell you this over and over again -- but everything they say is true. The day passes in a whirlwind blur of feverishly high emotions and even some emotional numbness, in my case anyway. But seeing my fiance there waiting for me under the trees made time stand still for a moment.
